FAQ:

Leitner flashcard system

1. What is the Leitner flashcard system?

The Leitner flashcard system is a learning tool designed for the mental process of active recall. The learning method is based on the retention of the vocabulary in the long-term memory through the systematic repetition of individual flashcards. Leitner flashcard system

2. How does the Leitner system work on VocBox.com?

VocBox operates utilizing the well known and recognized Leitner card system: each word is entered on a single sheet with a translation on the back and the cards are stored in boxes. At the beginning, all cards are placed in box n°1. Subsequently, when a word is successfully repeated, the corresponding card is placed in box No. 2 - in the case of a failure in the repetition of the word, the card remains in box No. 1 until that word is learned. From that point, the card must go through a full cycle until the last box so that the word is permanently stored in one’s long-term memory.

1.1 Customized Sets

In the "customized sets" section, you will find the words and definitions that you have created. To define your own vocabulary set, you need to log in with your VocBox username.

In order to do so, you can either create a VocBox user account, or directly use your Facebook account.

You can make your own vocabulary cards under the heading "create" and define a set of vocabulary. Name each set in order to describe the topic of vocabulary that it contains. Once you have decided on the theme, you can begin to develop your customized vocabulary cards.

Write your electronic cards with the first word on the front and the translation or definition on the back, and then click on the "Submit" button to save your cards. You can create as many cards as you like (min. 4 cards per set).

By using the "Copy / Paste" button you can insert all of your vocabulary lists directly from a Word file, separating the two languages with a comma. Then use the "Preview" button to add your list of words to the set.

If you do not want other users to have access to your set, simply tick the "Private" option.

You can then modify the set at any time and add new vocabulary by clicking on the “Edit” button in the “Learning” section.

1.2 Official sets

In the section “official sets”, you will find predefined vocabulary sets under three sections:

General vocabulary: In this category you will find words and sentences that are used on a daily basis. This vocabulary is especially useful if you are traveling to a Spanish, German or French speaking country.

Specific interest vocabulary: This section contains vocabulary sets related to a specific topic.

Language magazine: Under this heading you will find the vocabulary used in the articles of our free online magazine (Spanish: veintemundos.com , English: TeaTime-Mag.com).

To access this vocabulary, you do not need to have a VocBox account. Just click on the set to begin learning the desired language. You can now memorize the words or begin the first stage of the Leitner memorization cycle by clicking on the button "Learn". To save your results you have to log in to your VocBox account where you can also test yourself by clicking on "Test".

1.3 Public sets

Under the heading "Public Sets" you will find sets of vocabulary created by others on various topics.

You can view the sets of other users, but not make changes to them.

Your own sets are also available to other users provided you have not ticked the "Private" box when creating your set.

2. Learning methods

2.1 The Leitner method - "Learning"

By clicking the "Learn" button, you will begin your learning according to the principles of the Leitner Learning System.

As the card appears, you will be tested and if you know the translation of the word click on the button labeled "right", which moves the card to the next successive box. If you don’t know the correct translation click on "wrong", this brings the card back to box No. 1. Your results will appear at the end of the set and you can save it and continue with the next set. When all the cards in a set land in box No. 6, the set was successfully learned.

2.2 The written test - "Test"

You can also use the method of the written test to test your knowledge. To do this, click on the "Test" button. This function is useful for checking your written knowledge. You will get your result at the end but it will not be saved.
